Letter to the Editor, Circleville Herald, Published March 5, 2010 To the Editor Currently, over 100 million Americans have either no health insurance or worthless health insurance. That number is growing. Conservatives dismiss "those people" as deserving their fate because they are "not like us". Every day, more of those conservatives join "those people". Remember the old story, "They came for the gypsies, ... Jews, ... and I did not care because I was not one. ... ". Our health system is, by far, the most costly yet has the worst outcomes among developed nations in virtually all categories except for the longevity of people who have already reached the age of 65 for Medicare. There we are above average. See the Nicholas Kristof column at http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/05/opinion/05kristof.html . Some of us have good health insurance (Medicare and TriCare for Life). If we have no moral compass it is easy for us to plot a course straight ahead stepping over the sick, dying, and dead as we go. The for-profit health insurers make enormous profits (and their executives get obscene bonuses) cherry picking clients, then fabricating pre-existing conditions, denying claims, raising premiums and canceling policies. That doesn't matter to anyone except the victims and those of us who have a moral compass.
